Pig secrets: curiosities you wouldn’t expect.
Pigs are much more than farm animals: they are intelligent, social, and possess surprising traits that often go unnoticed. A privileged sense of smell.
One of the most remarkable abilities of pigs is their astonishing sense of smell. Their snout, beyond helping them find food, contains a highly developed olfactory system. Thanks to this ability, they have even been trained to detect underground truffles and assist in security and rescue operations.
They can’t sweat (and it’s not a myth).
Unlike humans, pigs don’t have functional sweat glands. This means they can’t regulate their temperature through sweating. That’s why they wallow in mud—not just as a fun habit, but as a vital strategy to cool down and protect themselves from insects.
Emotional and social intelligence.
Recent studies have shown that pigs have cognitive abilities comparable to those of some primates. They can solve problems, remember solutions, and recognize other individuals, both human and pig. They also learn by observation and show empathy, making them highly social and emotionally sensitive animals.

When this natural behavior is restricted—for example, in intensive farming systems—behavioral problems can arise, such as tail biting or stereotypies.
Environmental impact.
In the wild, pigs play important ecological roles: they turn over soil, disperse seeds, and help maintain ecosystem balance. However, in intensive systems, pig production can have significant environmental impacts, such as soil and water pollution from organic waste.
Pigs are complex, sensitive, and intelligent animals, and their traditional image as mere meat producers does them no justice. Understanding their abilities and needs is the first step toward valuing them as they deserve, both in rural settings and in the context of scientific research and environmental education.
