Impossible Foods: plant-based alternatives for a greener future.

Impossible Foods is an American company founded in 2011 by Dr. Patrick O. Brown, with the mission of creating plant-based meat alternatives that are delicious, nutritious, and sustainable. Its main goal is to reduce reliance on traditional livestock farming, which consumes a large amount of natural resources and significantly contributes to greenhouse gas emissions.

The Impossible™ Burger: a flagship product.

The company’s most iconic product is the Impossible™ Burger, a burger made entirely from plant-based ingredients that mimics the taste, texture, and aroma of beef. A key component in its formulation is soy leghemoglobin, a protein containing heme, which is responsible for the characteristic taste of meat. This ingredient allows the Impossible™ Burger to “bleed” and have a juiciness similar to that of a traditional burger.

Expansion of the product line.

In addition to the burger, Impossible Foods has expanded its product line to include plant-based alternatives to other types of meat, such as sausages, chicken nuggets, and ground meat. These products are designed to be used in a variety of recipes and culinary preparations, offering versatile options for consumers and chefs.

Growth and sustainability.

The company has experienced significant growth in recent years, expanding its presence in international markets and establishing partnerships with restaurant chains and retailers. Its focus on sustainability and innovation has drawn the attention of investors and consumers interested in reducing the environmental impact of their food choices.

Recent challenges.

In December 2024, the company faced a challenge when it announced the recall of approximately 250,712 kilograms of its Impossible™ Ground Sausage product due to possible contamination with metal fragments. This recall affected the “Savory” and “Spicy” varieties of the product, with best-by dates extending to January 2026. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) classified this recall as Class II, indicating that the product could pose a temporary health risk if consumed. Consumers were advised to dispose of the affected products or return them to the place of purchase for a refund.

Mission and future.

Despite this setback, Impossible Foods remains committed to its mission of transforming the global food system by creating meat alternatives that are more sustainable and ethical, without compromising the taste or quality consumers expect.
