Artificial insemination in hens is an advanced technique used in poultry farming to improve the reproductive efficiency of birds. Semen collection:
- Selection of the male: High-quality genetic roosters are selected.
- Stimulation: The rooster is stimulated to ejaculate by a gentle massage on the cloaca and the lower abdomen.
- Collection: The semen is collected in a clean container, avoiding contamination with feces or other waste.
Semen evaluation:
- Quality and quantity: The volume, concentration, and motility of the sperm are evaluated. Viability and sperm morphology tests can also be performed.
Dilution and storage:
- Dilution: The semen can be diluted with a special diluent to increase the volume and protect the sperm.
- Storage: Depending on the logistics, the semen can be used immediately or stored temporarily at an appropriate temperature to maintain sperm viability.
Insemination:
- Preparation of the female: Hens to be inseminated should be selected and prepared. Often, the tail is lifted, and pressure is applied to the abdomen to expose the cloaca.
- Insemination: Using a special pipette, the semen is introduced directly into the hen’s cloaca. The amount of semen used varies, but generally, small doses of high quality are administered.
Post-insemination:
- Monitoring: The birds are monitored to ensure there are no health problems and to check the fertility of the eggs.
Fertilization rate.
The number of eggs fertilized by artificial insemination in hens can vary depending on several factors, including semen quality, technique used, frequency of insemination, and the health of the birds. Under optimal conditions, with good quality semen and an adequate insemination technique, the fertilization rate can be quite high. Generally, a fertilization rate of around 80% to 95% is expected, although this may vary.
To maximize fertility, inseminations are usually performed every 7 to 10 days. This ensures that there is a sufficient number of viable sperm available in the hen’s oviduct to fertilize the released eggs.
